Peter is standing in front of the most educated men in Jerusalem, and he is not backing down.

These are the people who run the temple. They have degrees.

They know the law forward and backward. And in front of them is a fisherman from a small town who has no training, no credentials, and no reason to be this steady.

Luke writes down their reaction, and it is one of the best lines in the whole book.

When they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and realized they were ordinary men with no education, they were astonished.

And they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

Not that they were impressive. Not that they had prepared well. They had been with Jesus, and it was on them like a smell of smoke you carry out of a room.

Now remember who Peter is. This is the same man who, a few weeks earlier, stood by a fire in a courtyard and swore he had never met Jesus. Three times. To a servant girl. He was not brave. He was not steady. He fell apart at the first real pressure and went home and wept.

So what changed between that fire and this room?

Not his personality. Not his willpower. He met the risen Jesus on a beach and got asked one question three times, once for every denial, and every time the answer was the same: feed my sheep. He was not lectured. He was restored. Then he was sent.

That is the only thing that has ever produced a glow. Not talent. Not confidence. Being with Jesus, being forgiven by Him, and refusing to walk away from the room where He is.

You cannot fake that and you do not have to earn it. You just have to keep showing up.
